What is an NFT Airdrop?

A crypto or NFT airdrop is a marketing initiative usually carried out by a blockchain-oriented startup or an ongoing project to kickstart their digital currency or NFT venture. The primary goal is to increase visibility for the cryptocurrency/NFT project and encourage greater participation in trading once it becomes available on an exchange or marketplace, while also rewarding dedicated, long-term holders, among other objectives.

These airdrop campaigns are typically advertised on the company's website, social media platforms, and cryptocurrency forums. Specific wallets on the blockchain network or wallets holding particular coins are selectively chosen to receive these tokens or coins.

How Do Airdrops Work?

To become eligible for airdrops, you must complete specific tasks or acquire and maintain a particular cryptocurrency or NFTs, which we'll refer to as your "base currency." You'll need to hold onto this base currency for an extended period to receive the newly airdropped cryptocurrency, also known as tokens.

Some coins or NFTs may demand that you maintain a minimum token balance to qualify for their airdrop, while others offer a 1-to-1 exchange with no minimum holding requirement. Nowadays, many airdrops focus on tasks such as bridging cryptocurrencies or engaging in social media activities like tweeting. Airdrops essentially operate on a mutual "you scratch my back, and I'll scratch yours" principle.

3 of many reasons why these airdrops really work:

1. Advertising: Many startup companies utilize airdrops as a deliberate promotional strategy to draw more attention to their primary cryptocurrency. In essence, it serves as an alternative form of advertising.

2. Value: Airdrops also serve as an effective means to temporarily boost the value of the project or the initial base cryptocurrency. Setting criteria to hold one coin in exchange for receiving another free coin typically benefits both parties in the long run. After all, who doesn't appreciate receiving complimentary assets?

3. Time sensitive: Most airdrops come with a deadline, inducing FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) once the airdrop concludes. This dynamic creates an "ebb and flow" scenario, where the cryptocurrency's value experiences significant fluctuations due to its high volatility and newness to the market. Consequently, I strongly recommend selling a portion as soon as it becomes available on the market, depending on your level of confidence in the project.

Airdrops have the potential to deposit complimentary cryptocurrency or NFTs directly into your digital wallet. The true uncertainty lies in whether these newly acquired tokens will appreciate in value over time. At the moment of their distribution, their future performance remains uncertain. Nevertheless, it's undeniable that receiving something for free leaves little room for complaint, doesn't it?

How to Join an Airdrop?

A manual airdrop involves actively engaging with developers on social media platforms. You'll likely be asked to share a post, participate in surveys, or complete forms. Additionally, some tasks may involve actions on test networks or processes like token bridging or NFT minting on existing networks. While some of these tasks may come with a fee ranging from $5 to $25, there are also free tasks available. Rest assured, these quick tasks won't demand an excessive amount of your time, and the rewards make it worthwhile in the end.

In contrast, automatic airdrops don't necessitate any action beyond having an active wallet containing the requisite initial cryptocurrency coins or NFTs. As mentioned earlier, the wallet should be compatible with either ERC20 or Solana tokens/NFTs, depending on the specific airdrop requirements.

Why Are Airdrops Worthwhile? Things To Consider…

Airdrops offer you the opportunity to acquire new cryptocurrency/NFTs that you might not have obtained otherwise. In the least favorable scenario, you end up with a complimentary coin that holds little to no value and simply resides idly in your wallet. However, it typically costs you very little to nothing.

In the most favorable scenario, both the base currency and the airdropped coin you possess see their values rise. As a result, you may unintentionally find yourself with a profitable outcome to boast about, all without having to invest anything significant except for a small amount of your time.

Risks of Airdrops

AExercise extreme caution when engaging in airdrops, as they can attract dishonest individuals. For instance, numerous fake Twitter accounts have been crafted to mimic official cryptocurrency company profiles. These imposters pose as team developers and deceitfully ask for your wallet's private key to supposedly deliver the airdropped coins.

It's crucial to understand that legitimate airdropped tokens never require your private keys. Should you encounter such a situation, promptly report the suspicious account to Twitter.

Another common scheme involves bogus Twitter accounts sharing instructions that urge you to send cryptocurrency to a wallet address owned by the scammer in exchange for receiving your purportedly free tokens. Authentic developers will never request tokens from you, so if you encounter such a request, once again, report it to Twitter. Despite these relatively easy-to-spot scams, airdrops can offer substantial benefits. Please be aware that it may take some time for these coins to become available, with a typical waiting period ranging from one to six months.
